Since 2000, l'Association Francophone de l'Interaction Humain-Machine (AFIHM) organizes every two years the Rencontres des Jeunes Chercheuses et Jeunes Chercheurs (RJC) in Human Computer Interaction. This event follows a series of successful doctoral meetups that trained dozens of future professional HCI researchers and practitioners in a convivial and motivating environment where they live and work together for a few days. You can have a look at the previous RJC editions.

The RJC address PhD students, and, on a limited basis, Master students in HCI. After the success of the two last editions involving French and Italian young researchers, the RJC will continue to be held in English to facilitate the exchanges between French and and non-French speaking PhD students.

The 2024 edition will focus on HCI and sustainability and will cover:

• Presentations of the participants' ongoing research with short talks (madness) and posters.
• Lectures on practical tools for HCI research (conducting experiments, statistics, public speaking, etc).
• Perspectives and careers opportunities in HCI.
• Check the program for more details on the activities.

The RJC IHM 2024 are supported by the AFIHM (Association Francophone d'Interaction Humain-Machine – French Association of Human-Computer Interaction) and our sponsors (CESI, Inria, LISN, Noesya, tobii).

If you are interested but not have the means to attend (e.g. master student interested in doing a PhD but without funding at the moment), send your application with a message that describes your situation. Depending on the amount of participants we have and final costs, we might be able to give scholarhips for students to cover registration and transport fees.

Practical Information

• When? September 30th to October 4th, 2024.
• Where? The RJC IHM 2024 will take place at Village de Vacances du C.A.E.S. du C.N.R.S., Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, France.
• For who? Our target audience is Master and PhD students in Human-Computer Interaction.
• In which language? English.
• How much? The registration is set to 280 euros per participant. The fees include housing, lunches, dinners, breaks and activities during the whole event (4 nights). Bus connection between the train station La Rochelle and the Village de Vacances on September 30th and October 4th is also included.
• How many? We can accomodate 25 participants in total.

Application process

Ph.D and Master students working in the field of HCI are welcome to participate. The number of places is limited, the 20% of places is reserved to students from Universities outside France. To apply, we ask you to submit a one-page article (pdf in a two columns format, following the ACM “sigconf” publication template) which includes: the title of your Master or PhD thesis, a summary of your thesis, and a short motivation on why participating in the meetup would be beneficial. The selection will be based on the following rules:

• The order of application and the one-page article will be used to select between students if we receive a large number of registrations.
• A waiting list will be created with a notification of acceptance sent not later than June 30th.
• We might balance participants to cover several teams and Universities across participants.
